Ex-NATO Chief Calls on Europe to Take Charge of Its Own Destiny
“I do not believe it is the time for a definitive break between Europe and the United States. But we Europeans must take care of our own destiny,” Anders Fogh Rasmussen told French radio broadcaster.
He emphasized that NATO requires reform and strengthening, with Europe assuming a more prominent role within the alliance.
“This is a conflict initiated by US President Donald Trump,” Rasmussen said, dismissing the notion that NATO should intervene to reopen the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing Iran war.
Since Feb. 28, the US and Israel have carried out airstrikes on Iran, killing over 1,340 people, including Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting US forces.
The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route, has also been largely restricted since early March.
Rasmussen noted that individual NATO members might choose to assist the US independently, mentioning that “France has indicated it could be involved if there is a UN mandate.”
Addressing recent US criticism of the alliance, the former NATO chief said Europe can no longer rely on flattery and must adopt a firm stance. “The era of flattery is over. We must be firm with Donald Trump and this is the only language he understands,” he said.
