Patriot Practice Golf Boot Camp
Tees Up Wellness for Montgomery County Veterans

FONDA, N.Y. -- County Executive Pete Vroman announced today the launch of the Patriot Practice Golf Boot Camp, sponsored by the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Program. The initiative offers county veterans and their families an opportunity to enhance their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being during the winter season while fostering camaraderie.

“Our veterans have given so much to our country, and it’s important that we continue finding ways to support them,” Vroman said. “I commend the Dwyer Program for not only improving the physical and mental well-being of veterans but also strengthening the sense of community among those who have served.”

Similar events have been held throughout northeastern New York via PGA HOPE, the military pillar of PGA REACH. PGA HOPE is a rehabilitative program designed to introduce golf to veterans with disabilities and is the only golf program for veterans taught by PGA professionals trained in VA-approved adaptive sports instruction.

Patriot Practice mirrors PGA HOPE’s tenets, with sessions conducted indoors at SimGolf Golf Performance Center.

The program aims to create a safe environment for veterans and their families, establish and strengthen relationships of trust, provide enjoyable experiences, and empower participants to feel confident playing golf independently after the program.

"Programs like Patriot Practice are crucial because they offer a space where veterans can come together, share experiences and build confidence in a new skill," Veteran Peer Advocate Andrew Whittingham said.

The Patriot Practice Golf Boot Camp is free for Montgomery County veterans and their families. Sessions are held every Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. to noon through March 25, 2025. Participants are not required to attend every session, and golf instruction is available for beginners, intermediate and advanced players.

"Physical activity and social engagement are key components of overall health, helping to strengthen the connection between mind and body," Public and Mental Health Director Sara Boerenko said. "For our veterans, programs like this provide an opportunity to stay active, build relationships, and support their overall well-being in a meaningful way."
